Resolution criteria. Open until either event happens Clarification on Resolution Criteria: The market will remain open indefinitely if no human ever walks on Mars. In the absence of a human landing on Mars, the market will resolve upon Elon Musk's death. A human does not need to survive the Mars landing for the market to resolve YES.

Why we chose it

This bet is a two-variable mortality-vs-engineering wager that just got way more interesting in February. On Feb 6, 2026 the WSJ reported SpaceX told investors it would prioritize a March 2027 uncrewed lunar landing over Mars, and two days later Musk confirmed on X that SpaceX had shifted focus to a "self-growing city on the Moon," pushing the Mars-city effort to roughly 2031-2033. That pivot — sometimes called "Moon Base Alpha" — is the running joke fueling fresh volume: the guy who built his brand on dying on Mars just punted Mars.

Musk's slippage track record is part of the comedy: he committed to a 2018 Mars landing back in 2016, revised to 2022 with Starship, then to a 2026 uncrewed/2028-2030 crewed mission — none of the earlier dates happened.

Why this exact market and not "humans on Mars by 2040" — it's specifically a life-expectancy bet. Musk turns 55 in 2026; realistic YES case is a 2033-2035 crewed landing while he's in his mid-60s. NO case: another five-year slip stacks onto actuarial risk, ketamine-tabloid risk, and the new lunar detour eating the next decade. The resolution date (2045) gives 19 years of runway, which is basically asking whether boring mortality outruns Musk-time.

Sal
It's not a Mars bet, it's an actuarial one. He's fifty-five, the timeline's mid-sixties at best, and February he pushed Mars to the thirties himself. Even money feels honest.
Eddie
He keeps moving the goalposts and the market keeps moving the casket. Every slipped timeline is a tick against his own table — and he's the one doing the slipping.
