Resolution criteria. This market will resolve to "Yes" if, before January 1, 2027, a humanoid robot completes a full marathon (42.195 kilometers) in a time faster than the current official human marathon world record. The current men's marathon world record is 2 hours, 0 minutes, and 35 seconds, set by Kelvin Kiptum at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, 2023.

Why we chose it

This bet exists because of a specific viral moment: in April 2026, "Lightning," a running robot from Chinese smartphone maker Honor, finished the Beijing E-Town half-marathon in 50:26 — beating the human half-marathon world record by over six minutes, swinging its short forearms for balance at 169cm tall. That instantly turned a "cute robot stumbles" story (last year's inaugural race saw humanoids careen out of control or lay down at the starting line, with only six of 21 finishing) into a legitimate "are they coming for the marathon record?" question.

The market resolves YES only if a robot beats the full 42.195km human record — and note that bar just got harder: at the 2026 London Marathon, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe ran 1:59:30, breaking Kiptum's mark and making all three podium finishers sub-2:00.

Case for YES: Manifold's creator clarified the robot can be remote-controlled, have batteries swapped, and get human help after falls — so a Chinese team could stage a demo run purely for headlines before Dec 31. Case for NO: doubling the half distance means overheating motors, battery swaps, and sub-2:00 pace on a certified course with "reputable" documentation — a much bigger ask than a Beijing exhibition lap.

Sal
The human bar is Sabastian Sawe at 1:59:30 in London. A forklift with sneakers needs sub-two on a certified course by New Year's. Forty-nine is rich.
Eddie
Sal, half the market genuinely thinks a machine does what took humans a hundred years to approach. The price isn't the wonder — the coin flip is.
