Three time windows, forty-four grand traded on when we crack the sun in a bottle: about a third by 2030, roughly a coin flip by 2035, and 54 by 2040 — the chalk. A curve that says traders believe fusion is coming but cannot say when, and that even fourteen years might not do it. The nuance the board hides is definitional. Ignition already happened — Lawrence Livermore got more energy out of a fuel pellet than the laser put in, for a nanosecond, back in 2022 — so this market turns on the harder bar: useful, sustained power, not a lab flash.
The bull case is the private wave — Commonwealth Fusion's SPARC machine expected to switch on soon, venture money flooding in, "thirty years away, always" replaced by named hardware. The bear case is fusion's entire history, in which the named hardware is always five years from the breakthrough — twenty years away for seventy years, as the line goes. The public extrapolated a nanosecond into a power plant; the 2030 bucket is where the honesty lives.

Daily price. The dotted line is the day the episode was written — the odds Sal and Eddie were looking at. The solid line is the day it aired.
The board has barely moved since — no outcome has shifted by more than two points.
