The 22% on a supervolcano erupting before 2050 is wildly juicy as a number — base-rate-wise it should be near-zero, so something is driving the bid. That something is Campi Flegrei, the caldera under Naples that's been all over doom-Twitter and TikTok the past two years. Ground is rising ~10 mm/month (140+ cm total since 2005), seismicity hit 47–70 events/week in early 2026, gas emissions are elevated, and INGV has called it "accelerating unrest."A M4.6 quake on June 30, 2025 was felt across Naples — the strongest event there in decades. A 2026 arxiv paper flagging a possible "critical mechanical threshold" between 2030–2034 is the nerd-bait fueling the bet.
Realistic YES case: Campi Flegrei, Aira (Japan), or Taupō goes VEI-7+. Aira Caldera and Taupō are flagged "most likely to erupt." Realistic NO: USGS pegs Yellowstone's annual eruption odds at ~1 in 730,000, and even Campi Flegrei unrest historically resolves as phreatic burps, not super-eruptions. 22% is essentially "Naples panic premium" priced in.
