Resolution criteria. Resolves Yes if a new species is confirmed matching a known cryptid. Criteria: Only significant broadly recognized cryptids that aren’t sub-species of known species will be considered. For example the Wikipedia list of cryptids includes the Eastern Cougar which could be just a cougar living in eastern North America, or the British Big Cat could be a non-domestic puma living in the UK.

Why we chose it

The 4% is doing something subtle: real animals do get discovered — the saola, a large mammal, walked out of the Vietnamese forest into science as late as 1992 — but no *named* cryptid ever has. That's the distinction this market lives on. "Confirmed" means a bigfoot, a Nessie, a Mothman: creatures whose entire evidence base is testimony and blur, needing a body or DNA that convinces actual biologists by 2030 — a type specimen, not a blurry photo from your uncle.

The book is tiny — barely a thousand dollars, perhaps fifteen accounts arguing; less a market than a group chat with a price feed. The reference class is brutal: a century-plus of expeditions, trail cams multiplying by the millions, and the confirmed-cryptid count holding at zero — every camera added makes the silence louder. The mischief in the fine print is what counts as "a cryptid" at all: de-extinction startups already market engineered animals under legendary names, exactly the stunt that could force a resolution argument. The 4% isn't hope for bigfoot; it's insurance against a definition.

What we thought

SalThe Handicapper
EddieThe Philosopher
Sal
New species get confirmed all the time. Beetles, deep-sea fish. Never the ones with the plush toy already in the gift shop. Four cents says the body never shows.
Eddie
Fifteen people arguing over Mothman's resolution criteria. Nobody's selling a plush because they think the data's coming — they're selling it because they want it to be true.
